GREENWOOD – Shannon McKever scored 22 points while Tiara Good and Stephanie Ponds added double-doubles, leading the Lander Lady Bearcats to a 93-79 Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia College & State University Saturday afternoon during Homecoming at Horne Arena.
Lander swept the season series, improving to 15-10 overall and 9-6 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College fell to 11-11, 6-9. The Lady Bearcats won 107-97 in Milledgeville, Ga., on Jan. 12.
McKever led all scorers with her 22 points, making 10 of 13 shots from the floor, and also had eight rebounds. Good was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds. Ponds had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kiana Smith had 12 points and nine assists, and LaShonda Chiles added 12 points and seven steals.
Elicia Lynch led the Lady Bobcats with 19 points while Ashley Williams had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Tiauna Brantley scored 12 points while Dominique Huffin added 10 points.
Lander made 31 of 68 shots from the floor (46 percent), 25 of 29 free throws (86 percent), and six of 18 from behind the 3-point line (33 percent). Georgia College hit 29 of 73 shots from the floor (40 percent), 13 of 22 free throws (59 percent), and eight of 22 from behind the arc (36 pecent). The Lady Bearcats had a 48-39 edge on the boards and had 16 turnovers to Georgia College's 15.
There were several ties and lead changes in the early part of the second half. Lander got its inside passing game going with McKever scoring three baskets in a row in the paint, giving the hosts a 60-55 lead with 13:17 left in the game. Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers to push the Lady Bearcat leads to 63-57 and 68-61.
Georgia College battled back, getting consecutive 3-pointers by Emily Bixler to tie the game at 72 with 7:30 left. Lander regained the lead on two Smith free throws and a Chiles three-point play, making it 77-72 at the 6:36 mark.
After Williams made two free throws to pull the Bobcats within 77-74, Chiles drove into the paint for a basket and then found Ponds inside for a lay-up to match Lander's largest lead of the game at 81-74 with 4:30 left.
The Lady Bearcats built on that lead when Good, fouled behind the arc, hit three free throws for an 84-74 lead at the 3:47 mark. After Lindsey Smith hit one free throw for Georgia College, Kiana Smith found McKever inside for a lay-up to make it 86-75. After an exchange of free throws, Chiles hit a long 3-pointer to push Lander's lead to 93-78 with 35 seconds to go.
Candi McCall's jumper gave Lander a 23-17 lead midway through the first half. Georgia College put together a 9-2 run, taking its first lead of the game at 28-27 on a put-back basket by Williams with 6:12 to go. Lynch's basket gave the Bobcats their largest lead of the half at five points, 35-30, with 2:10 left.
The Lady Bearcats regained the lead when Good was fouled behind the arc and hit three free throws, making it 37-35 at the 1:06 mark. Lynch's driving lay-up in the final seconds tied the game at 39 at the break. Lander hit 13 of 15 free throws in the first half with Good and Andrea Butler making five apiece.
