Lander men’s basketball falls to Newberry College, 87-67

NEWBERRY - Clemente Martin and Brett Goodwell scored 27 and 25 points respectively Thursday night to lead the Newberry College men's basketball team to an 87-67 non-conference victory over Lander at Eleazer Arena.

Newberry improves to 8-2 on the season, while Lander slips to 5-2.

Martin and Clemente combined to hit 20-of-27 field goals and 11-of-15 free throws for the Indians. Jesse Wheeler added 13 points in the victory.

Houston Wright led Lander with 22 points and six rebounds. Wright connected on 9-of-15 field goals, including 1-of-1 three pointers, and 3-of-6 free throws. Kevin Kelley added 10 points for the Bearcats.

Newberry, which led 42-32 at halftime, connected on 31-of-50 field goals for 62 percent, including 5-of-11 three pointers for 45.5 percent. The Indians also made 20-of-32 free throws for 62.5 percent.

Lander made 24-of-67 floor shots for 35.8 percent, including 6-of-21 three pointers for 28.6 percent. The Bearcats also made 13-of-20 free throws for 65 percent.

Newberry outrebounded the Bearcats, 37-35.
