GREENWOOD – Annie Polhamus and Jessica Skowron scored goals, leading the Lander Lady Bearcats to a 2-0 Peach Belt Conference women's soccer victory over Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon.
Lander improved to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. The Hurricanes fell to 3-9, 0-2.
Georgia Southwestern goalkeeper Christy Drabek turned back Lander's first scoring attempt in the 13th minute when she tipped Jannica Finnberg's bullet shot over the crossbar.
The Lady Bearcats grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 10:06 mark on a long goal from the left side by Polhamus. Her shot found the upper right side of the net.
Skowron upped Lander's lead to 2-0 at 41:43 off an assist from Charlotte Hall.
The Lady Bearcats led 2-0 at the break, out-shooting Georgia Southwestern 15-0 in the first half. There were no goals in the second half with Lander out-shooting the visitors 10-2. Elizabeth Keller had the Hurricanes' only two shots of the game in the final 13 minutes, the last resulting in a nice save by Lander goalkeeper Rachel Baggett.
For the game, the Lady Bearcats out-shot Georgia Southwestern 25-2. Drabek had 11 saves while Baggett, playing in goal for Lander in the second half, had one save. Katherine Baltz played the first half in goal for the Lady Bearcats and had no saves. Lander's Rachael Hine, who has excelled in goal for the last three-plus years for the Lady Bearcats, started and played in the midfield.
