COLUMBUS, Ga. - Seventh-ranked Columbus State women's soccer team got three first-half goals and cruised to a 5-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over Lander at the Walden Soccer Complex on Saturday.
The win keeps Columbus State unbeaten in PBC play at 5-0, and moves the team's overall record to 13-3. Lander is now 6-6 overall and 2-4 in league play.
CSU pelted Lander goalkeeper Katherine Baltz with 18 shots in the first half and 11 more in the final period. Baltz responded with 11 saves.
Kate Walton got the first CSU goal in just the fourth minute of action, taking a deflection off a defender in the box and heading it past Baltz for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Cougars added to the lead in the 18th minute as Gina Goforth took a nice crossing pass from Stephanie Parrish and beat a diving Baltz for the 2-0 lead. Baltz was able to get a hand on the ball but could not deflect it away from the net, giving Goforth her team-leading 12th tally of the season. Melinda Bush closed out the first-half scoring in the 37th minute as she took a feed from Jessica Woodson and poked it in for her seventh goal of the year.
Lander managed just one shot in the first half, that coming on a header in the 19th minute by Jannica Finnberg. Monica Sanchez collected her only save of the game on the play and foiled the Bearcats' best scoring opportunity. Kelly Nimmo would replace Sanchez after half time and would collect two saves before giving way to freshman Michelle Krengel, who kept Lander scoreless for the last six minutes.
CSU got insurance goals in the 61st and 81st minutes in the second half. Jordan McKenzie got the first goal after Baltz had thwarted another shot. The deflected ball came to McKenzie's feet and she slipped it in for a 4-0 lead. The final score came as Rachel Walthall took a pass from Emily Fifield and banged it in for the 5-0 lead.
CSU held a 28-3 advantage in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Lander committed 10 fouls to nine for the Lady Cougars and there were no cautions issued.
