GREENWOOD - Five different Lander men's soccer players scored goals Wednesday night as the Bearcats defeated Newberry College, 5-2, in a non-conference game.
Lander improves to 7-1-1 overall, while Newberry drops to 2-7.
Martyn Bell led off the scoring barrage with a long goal from the right side at 4:51 on an assist from Jamie Davison. Aaron Brittain made it 2-0 at 17:11 when he chipped the ball over the head of Newberry goalkeeper Will Dieterich at 17:11 on an assist from Craig Hughes. The Bearcats took a 3-0 lead when Adam Arthur scored from directly in front of the goal on assist from Brittain at 27:44.
Newberry cut the margin to 3-1 at 41:11 on Debola Ongunseye's unassisted goal at 41:11.
In the second half, Lander's David Winskill found the back of the net on a 30-yard blast from the right sideline at 73:12 to make it 4-1.
Newberry's Ogunseye cut the margin to 4-2 at 87:39 when he fired a shot from 25 yards out.
Lander's Davison scored the game's final goal on an assist from Ivan Stoykov at 88:03 from directly in front of the goal.
Newberry outshot Lander, 18-17, but the Bearcats led in corner kicks, 9-5.
Lander goalkeeper Billy Hale was credited with five saves, while Indian subsitute James Woods had four.
