DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Christina Barbour scored two first half goals, leading the Lander women's soccer team to a 3-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over North Georgia College & State University in a Peach Belt Conference match at the NCGSU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Bearcats, who are off to one of their best starts in the nine-year history of the program, improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the PBC. North Georgia drops to 5-3, 0-2.
Lander scored the first goal of the match in the seventh minute when Barbour found herself on the receiving of a long ball played from the back of the Lady Bearcats defense. She sent the shot to the far post to beat North Georgia goalkeeper Jessica English for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bearcats struck again, when Barbour took a pass from Christin Moss and beat English in a one-on-one situation in the 17th minute, giving Lander a 2-0 lead in the first half of play.
The score stayed that way throughout the first half and into the second half. Lander had another opportunity in the second half Jessica Skowron's header from a corner was saved at the far post by North Georgia defender Elyse Landau in the 47th minute.
North Georgia's first threat on goal came in the 68th minute when Lauren Cappy took a long ball from English and beat her defenders. Cappy's shot was saved at the far post by a diving Rachael Hine at the far post.
Lander scored its third goal of the match Jannica Finnberg netted a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
The Lady Saints threatened again in the 75th minute when Laura Nunnery dribbled through three defenders, only to collide with Hines just inside the 18 followed by a Lander defender knocking the ball away with an empty net.
