Lady Bearcats soccer triumphs over Wingate, 2-1

WINGATE, N.C.----Lander freshman midfielder Jessica Skowron scored her first career goal in the 84th minute Saturday to break a 1-1 tie and give the Bearcats a 2-1 non-conference victory over Wingate University.

The Bearcats improve to 3-1 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-4 overall. 

A free kick by LU junior midfielder Stacey Copeland gave Skowron her scoring opportunity. Copeland's free kick found Bearcat junior forward Jannica Finnberg open in the middle of the field. Finnberg flicked the ball to Skowron, who found the back of the nets at the 83:18 mark.

Bearcat freshman forward Kelley Maupin scored Lander's first goal in 12th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead at intermission. Maupin's goal was also the first of her Bearcat career.

Wingate kept battling, tying the contest in the 61st minute. Bulldog sophomore midfielder Jordan Mayer scored her team-best third goal of the season on an assist from freshman forward Jenni Barbett at the 60:26.

Wingate outshot Lander 11-7. Bearcat junior goalkeeper Rachael Hine picked up the win for the visitors. Hine allowed one goal and recorded three saves. Wingate junior goalkeeper Kathryn Smith also played 90 minutes, allowing two goals and getting three saves.
