MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 22 Georgia College & State University softball team (24-12, 5-3 PBC) needed the fourth shutout of the season from Mandy Chandler in game one and a clutch base hit from Brianna Hope in game two to sweep Lander (11-25, 4-8 PBC) tonight (March 21) at the Peeler Complex. GCSU won the first game, 1-0, and took the nightcap, 2-1. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Both games had little fireworks, as they were pitching duals. GCSU posted game one's lone run in the second. Hope finished with two of the three RBI for the day, none more important than the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh of game two.
Junior designated player Jordan Tharp led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, later scoring when Hope ripped a single to the right side.
Chandler got the win in a complete-game effort, fanning 11 and allowing four hits. Her counterpart, Ashlea Burdette, dropped to 4-10 with the three-hit loss.
Game two was a come-from-behind effort, as the Bearcats struck first blood in the fourth. Catcher Daisy Stewart swatted the first pitch she saw over the left-center fence for the 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bobcats evened it out in the fifth, when catcher Shelbie Lindsey knocked in leftfielder Allison Schwimer who earlier singled.
Then GCSU took over in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to a few 'almosts' by the Lander defense. After two quick outs, Tharp dropped a single into right field. Lindsey laced a line drive to center that rolled out of the diving Leight Ann Kelley's glove, and Tharp took third in the chaos.
Hope pulled an 0-1 pitch into the hole between third and shortstop, just barely beating a strong throw from Bearcat shortstop Brittany Wallace, Tharp scored and ended the game.
Chandler threw the final 3 1/3 innings to pick up the win (13-6) giving up just two hits. Austin Murray took the loss for Lander, falling to 4-13.
