COLUMBUS, Ga.----The most successful season in the 10-year history of the Lander women's soccer team came to an end Friday when the third-seeded Lady Bearcats were defeated by second-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University, 3-1, in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference tournament hosted by Columbus State University.
Armstrong Atlantic improves to 14-3-1 overall, while Lander falls to 13-5.
AASU, which defeated Lander 6-0 last week, took a 1-0 lead at 21:52 when Shana Neves scored on a Kristin Burton assist. The Pirates stretched the margin to 2-0 at 50:52 when Brittany Carr found the back of the net on another assist from Burton. AASU's final score came at 65:19 when Burton scored on an assist from Carr.
Lander's lone score came at 87:40 when Stacey Copeland nailed a penalty kick.
Armstrong Atlantic outshot Lander, 20-6. Both teams had five corner kicks.
Lander goalkeeper Rachael Hine totaled eight saves, while AASU's Tracey Mitchell had four.
