Wingate defeats Lander women’s basketball in slugfest

WINGATE, N.C.----The Wingate University women's basketball team placed five players in double figures Monday night as the Lady Bulldogs won a slugfest against Lander, 95-86, in a non-conference game at Cuddy Arena.

Wingate improves to 2-1 overall, while Lander slips to 1-3.

Tiara Good led four Lander players in double figures with a game-high 26 points, while Stephanie Ponds added 22, LaShonda Chiles 16 and Kianna Smith 11. Good connected on 8-of-17 field goals, including 6-of-11 three-point shots, and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Ponds was 9-of-14 from the field. Good and Ponds both grabbed seven rebounds.

Erica Crumin led Wingate with 20 points, followed by Kate Edwards 13, Jessy Keitt 12, Kasey Gillis 12 and CC Brooks 10. Crumlin led Wingate in rebounds with a game-high 16.

Lander came out of the gate hot, taking a 5-0 lead on a three from Good. The Bulldogs fought back to tie it at eight on a lay-up from Brooks. Wingate would then go on a 16-5 run to take a 24-13 lead, getting a three-point play from Gillis to cap the spurt.

The Bulldogs held a 29-20 lead on a Crumlin lay-up from an Atkinson assist. Lander scored the next six points, getting four from Chiles to cut the lead to three. Edwards answered with a three-point field goal. The triple was followed by a three-point play from Ponds to cut the lead back to three.

The game would stay tight throughout the rest of the half. Wingate stretched it to seven at 42-35, but the Bearcats answered with a 10-2 run to end the half. The stretch was capped by a three from Chiles at the halftime buzzer, giving Lander a 45-44 lead at the intermission.

The Bearcats stretched the lead out to 51-46 early in the second half, getting two quick threes from Good. Wingate then responded with a game-changing 22-3 run in a five-minute span. Brooks capped off the run by hitting a jumper, then getting a steal and a lay-up, giving the Bulldogs a 68-54 lead. A three from junior guard Brittany West gave Wingate its largest lead at 73-58.

The lead stayed in double digits until a three from Good cut it to 81-72 with 7:27 remaining in the game. A lay-up from Kianna Smith, followed by four free throws from Good sliced the lead to three at 81-78.

Crumlin hit a jumper to stretch the lead back to five and Lander answered with lay-up from Good. Atkinson followed with a jumper. The Bearcats cut the lead back to three one final time on another lay-up from Good with 3:18 remaining. Wingate scored the next four points, getting a pair of free throws from Atkinson and a jumper from Crumlin to take a seven-point lead. The lead would not get below five the rest of the way.

Wingate shot 48 percent from the field in the game, while converting six-for-15 from three-point range. Lander also shot 48 percent in the game, while hitting 8-for-20 from beyond the arc. Wingate out-rebounded the Bearcats 51-37, while holding a 15-7 edge on the offensive glass. As a result, Wingate held a 12-4 advantage in second-chance points.

Both teams played aggressive defense, as Wingate had 14 steals and forced 20 turnovers. The Bulldogs scored 23 points from those turnovers. Lander had 10 steals. The Bearcats converted 19 Wingate turnovers into 21 points.
