Lander women’s soccer stays unbeaten in Peach Belt

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Lander's Jannica Finnberg bent a corner kick into the goal in the 20th minute as the Lady Bearcats soccer team stayed unbeaten in the Peach Belt Conference with a 1-0 victory over the University of North Carolina at Pembroke on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.

It was Finnberg's seventh goal of the season.

Lander improved to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the Peach Belt. The Lady Bearcats are in first place in the PBC while Columbus State is 4-0. Columbus State will play at Lander next Saturday. UNC-P fell to 0-4-1, 7-4-1.

UNCP took 18 shots doubling the total of Lander, which finished the game with nine. Lander's goalkeeper Rachael Hine recorded nine saves in the game as the junior from Stockton-on-Tees, England recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

Lander took advantage of a sluggish start by the Braves scoring the early goal and then keeping Pembroke off the board for the next 70 minutes, which included a UNCP penalty kick.

"It was a tale of two halves. We didn't come out ready to play in the first half, but I thought we dominated time of possession in the second," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We had a lot of good opportunities that we just didn't capitalize on and their goalkeeper made some great saves."

Lefke Boyson finished the match with five total shots and three shots on goal with Ashley Mcmanus also tallying three shots on goal for the Braves. Goalkeeper Whitney Beverly recorded just one save but the Bearcats only had two shots on goal.

The Braves will try to stay perfect in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon when UNCP travels to play Catawba on the campus of the Indians at 5 p.m. Lander will host Limestone also on Wednesday with game time set for 7:30 p.m.
