Lady Bearcats beat Mars Hill, set school record for wins

GREENWOOD----Jannica Finnberg scored two goals Wednesday night to lead the Lander women's soccer team to its single-season, school-record 10th victory, a 3-0 decision against Mars Hill in a non-conference game.

Lander improves 10-3 overall, while Mars Hill evens its record at 8-8. Lander broke the previous record of nine wins set by the 1999 team which went 9-8-1. Lander began its women's soccer program in 1998.

Stacey Copeland gave the Lady Bearcats a 1-0 lead when she headed the ball on an assist from Finnberg at 38:34.

Finnberg scored her first goal on an assist from Kelley Maupin at 51:11 when she got behind the goalkeeper and tapped the ball into the net. Her second goal, assisted by Valarie Smith, came at 65:39.

Lander outshot the Lady Lions, 22-10, and led in corner kicks, 5-3.

Mars Hill goalkeeper Claudia Cala had nine saves, while Lander's Rachael Hine, who earned the shutout, had four saves.
