NEWBERRY, S.C. – Ivan Stoykov scored his second goal of the season in the 66th minute Wednesday night to lead the No. 20-ranked Lander men's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference victory against Newberry.
Lander improves to 10-2-2 overall, while Newberry slips to 9-7.
Newberry's Kwame Gyamfi gave Newberry a 1-0 lead at 51:32 on an assist from Shane Abbott.
Lander struck back at 58:01 when Bearcats captain Martyn Bell lofted a shot from 40 yards out. The ball fell just below the crossbar and just above the outstretched hand of Newberry goalie Will Dieterich to tie the score at 1-1.
The Bearcats took the lead for good at 65:27 when Adam Arthur connected with Stoykov. Stoykov beat his defender on a run up the right side and Arthur led the streaking forward with a pass in the box. Stoykov beat Dieterich with a point blank shot to give the Bearcats the lead and the win.
Newberry outshot Lander, 21-15, but the Bearcats led in corner kicks, 5-4.
Lander goalkeeper Garrett Daum, who leads the Peach Belt Conference with nine shutouts this season, had six saves. Newberry's Dieterich had five.
