Smith's winning goal leads women’s soccer past Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C.----Lander midfielder Dani Smith scored the Golden Goal in the 104th minute Tuesday night to help Lander outlast Erskine, 3-2, in overtime of a non-conference game at Huggins Field.

Lander improves to 2-0, while Erskine drops to 0-2.

Lander controlled the match early, however, it was Erskine which scored first. Anna Weldon found the back of the net in the 25th minute on a breakaway to give the Flying Fleet an early 1-0 advantage.

Lander tied the game at 1-1 in the 59th minute when Aisha Reid whistled a shot past Erskine goalkeeper Katy Jackson. The Bearcats took their first lead of the match on a goal by Chrissie Wallace, assisted by Reid to give Lander the 2-1 advantage.

The Fleet tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Kacie Sears, forcing the overtime.

After a scoreless opening period in the first half of extra time, Smith struck for the deciding goal in the 104th minute to send Lander to a 2-0 start on the 2006 campaign, while Erskine falls to 0-2.
