Bearcat softball sweeps UNC Pembroke, 7-2 and 8-6

PEMBROKE, N.C.----Lander's Colleen Leggieri connected for a three-run homer in game two to give the Bearcats the doubleheader sweep over UNC Pembroke in Peach Belt softball action Sunday afternoon at LRA Field.  Lander took game one 7-2 and then downed the Braves 8-6 in game two.

With the sweep, Lander improves to 22-24-1 overall and 4-12 in league action, while UNCP falls to 22-29 and 2-14 in conference play.

In game one, Lander plated the first four runs of the game on four hits in the third to go ahead 4-0.  Lib Harris started the rally as she reached third on a three-base Braves' error as Corrie Bessinger, Melissa Ryals, Keri Davis and Ashlea Burdette all plated runs with RBI-singles.

The Bearcats tacked on a run in the fourth on a Heather Bishop plated Lander 's fifth run of the game on a RBI-groundout to short.

Lander pushed their lead to 7-0 in the sixth on back-to-back RBI-singles by Ryals and Leggieri.

The Bearcats' Burdette (10-6) earned the complete game shutout, while Candace Evans (16-16) took the loss for the Braves.

Game two saw the Braves jump ahead 3-0 after one frame thanks to a sac-fly by Wendi Cochran and two-run single by Kendal Purvis.  UNCP added a run in the second as Danielle Peters ripped a RBI-single up the middle plating Evans from third pushing the Braves' lead to 4-0.

Lander knotted the game at four-all in the third as the Bearcats scored three of their four runs with two outs.  The Bearcats then went ahead by one, 5-4, with a Rachelle Lawrence RBI-single back up the middle.

UNCP starting pitcher Candace Evans helped her own cause as she drove-in two in the fifth with a two-run single to left giving the Braves a 6-5 lead.

Leggieri pushed Lander ahead by two, 8-6, with a three-run homer in the sixth.  With two runners on, Leggieri blasted the first pitch she saw over the left field fence.

Bearcat reliever Austin Murray (5-7) picked up the win after entering the game in the fifth, while Evans (16-17) was handed the loss after surrendering the Leggieri dinger.
