AIKEN, S.C.----The No. 8-seeded, upset-minded Lander softball team ousted the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds from the Peach Belt Conference tournament this weekend, but lost its bid to play in the championship game Sunday when the Bearcats fell to No. 2 Georgia College & State University, 8-0, at Citizen's Field. After defeating fourth-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University, 7-3, in its first game Sunday, GCSU overpowered third-place Lander in the semifinals. Lander finishes the season at 27-28-1, while GCSU improves to 39-10. GCSU met top-seeded Columbus State in the tournament championship game.
Lander's Melissa Ryals and Colleen Leggieri were named to the 10-person PBC All-Tournament team.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Bobcats scored two runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Libby Kidd (21-7) earned the win for GCSU, striking out four and allowing just three hits in six complete innings. Lander's Austin Murray (7-8) was the losing pitcher, striking out two, walking five and allowing three earned runs on three hits in four innings of work.
For Georgia College, Heather Jones (1-for-1, two runs scored, three RBI) and Nikki Smith (2-for-3, one run, two RBI) both hit home runs.
For Lander, Rachelle Lawrence went 2-for-2.

Ashlea Burdette (13-8) earned the win, striking out two, walking three and allowing three earned runs on three hits. Armstrong Atlantic's Heather Woods (12-11) was the losing pitcher, walking two and allowing three earned runs on three hits in one-third of an inning.
Lander bolted out to a quick 3-0 first-inning lead. Heather Bishop singled, advanced to second on Corrie Bessinger's walk then scored on a Melissa Ryals double. Ryals and Bessinger then scored on Colleen Leggieri's single to centerfield.
The Bearcats extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when Lawrence scored on Lib Harris' RBI single to left field.
Keri Davis stroked a two-run, home run to right center in the fifth inning and Burdette scored on another Harris RBI single to give Lander a 7-0 lead.
Armstrong cut the margin to 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Veronica Castro belt a three-run homer over the left field fence, scoring Amanda Baxter and Ashley Bain.
For Lander, Davis went 1-for-4 with one homerun and two RBI, Ryals went 1-for-4 with one double, one run scored and one RBI and Leggieri went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.
For Armstrong Atlantic, Castro went 1-for-1 with three RBI.
