GREENWOOD, S.C.----Amber Yarborough drove a two-RBI double into deep left field in the fourth inning of the second game of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against North Georgia College & State University Wednesday afternoon to lead the Lander softball team to a 4-1 victory and a split of the PBC twinbill. Lander moves to 20-24-1 overall and 2-12 in the PBC, while North Georgia is 15-13, 3-9.
Yarborough's hit highlighted a four-run inning and that is all it would take to hold off the Saints. Yarborough's double scored Keri Davis and Colleen Leggieri. Rachel Lawrence and Heather Bishop followed with RBI singles.
Austin Murray (4-7) earned the victory, striking out eight, walking one and allowing one run (none earned) on five hits in six innings pitched. Ashlea Burdette earned her first save of the season, in one inning of work.
North Georgia's Danielle Rainey (1-3) took the loss, striking out one, walking one and allowing four runs (none earned) on six hits in four innings pitched.
Yarborough went 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI and Bishop went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
North Georgia's Lynsey Thompson went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
In the first game, North Georgia pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of three Lander errors in a game which was called in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.
Lander jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning on Leggieri's three-run homer, but it was all Saints after that. NGC&SU scored four runs in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth and eight in the fifth.
The Saints' Rachel Bridges (4-6) earned the win, striking out three, and allowing six earned runs on eight hits in three innings pitched. Lander's Jenna Kellett (7-11) was the losing pitcher, striking out three, walking three and allowing 10 runs (two earned) on 10 hits in three innings pitched.
For Lander, Leggieri went 2-for-3 with two homeruns and four RBI; Davis went 1-for-3 with one home run, one run scored and two RBI; and Corrie Bessenger went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
For North Georgia, Meigan Grimm went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI; Brittany Cobb went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI; Brittany Barnes went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI; and Candace Shubert went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Brooke Kesler went 1-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
