COLUMBUS, Ga.----Senior pitchers Stasha Morton and Randi Rainwater turned in strong performances here Friday to lead Columbus State to a softball sweep of Lander University in Peach Belt Conference action. Behind Morton, CSU took the first game 8-0, and Rainwater followed with a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
CSU is now 24-9 overall and 9-1 in PBC play, while Lander falls to 19-23, 1-11.
Morton allowed just two hits and fanned two in moving her season mark to 13-4
Morton got all the offense she would need as CSU exploded for seven runs in the third inning. Jenny Baaske smacked a two-run double and Rainwater cranked a three-run two-bagger into to left corner for five of the runs in the frame. Danielle Aszman and Carrie Mills plated the other two runs on groundouts.
CSU put the game away in the fifth, winning on the eight-run mercy rule. Rainwater singled with one out and Morton followed with a walk. With two out, Jessica Marino dropped down a bunt single which was thrown away at first, allowing Rainwater to score for the 8-0 win.
Heather Bishop got both hits for Lander from her leadoff spot. Jenna Kellett took the loss, going 2.1 innings and allowing six earned runs. She walked two and did not strike out a batter.
Randi Rainwater ran her scoreless innings streak to 30.2 innings in the nightcap with a complete-game two-hitter. She fanned two and did not allow a walk, hitting one batter. Rainwater is now 7-2 on the season after starting the year 0-2.
CSU took advantage of 10 walks by Lander starter Austin Murray in her four innings of work. Jenna Kellett pitched two innings of relief and gave up three walks, as well. CSU, however, could manage just six hits and left 14 runners on base in the game.
Jenny Baasked collected three of the six CSU hits in the game and scored two runs. Amber Lanier went 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Corrie Bessinger and Lib Harris got the only two hits for Lander.
