GREENWOOD---The Armstrong Atlantic softball team held off a late rally by Lander in the first game and the Pirates' Heather Woods tossed a three-hit, shutout in the second to claim a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, 6-5 and 13-0. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Armstrong Atlantic improves to 25-12 overall and 6-2 in the PBC, while Lander slips to 19-21-1, 1-9.
In the first game, Courtney Tucker (6-5) earned the victory, striking out three, walking one and allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Lander's Jenna Kellett (7-8) took the loss, striking out one, walking four and allowing three earned runs on two hits in 1.2 innings pitched. Austin Murray struck out five and walked three in relief for Lander.
For Armstrong Atlantic, Jeana Short (1-for-2, one runs scored, one RBI) and Danielle Bertram (3-for-3, one run scored, three RBI) both doubled.
For Lander, Melissa Ryals (2-for-3) and Rachelle Lawrence (2-for-4, one run) both doubled. Ashlea Burdette went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Amber Yarborough went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
In the second game, the Pirates pounded out 17 hits in the victory. Woods (6-5) earned the win, striking out five, walking one and allowing three hits in the complete seven innings. Lander's Kellett (7-9) took the loss, striking out two, walking six and allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings.
For Armstrong Atlantic, Deanna Beaty went 4-for-4 with one home run, one double, two runs scored and two RBI. Hunt (4-for-4, two runs, two RBI) had two doubles. Danielle Bertam went 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
For Lander, Keri Davis went 2-for-3 with one double.
