No. 25 Lander baseball falls to St. Andrews, 10-2

LAURINBURG, NC—Junior Cliff Allred went 4-for-4 from the plate to lead host St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 10-2 non-conference victory over No. 25 nationally ranked Lander University on Wednesday at Clark Field.

The Knights improve to 14-16 overall, while Lander moves to 20-9.

SAPC almost doubled up the hit total with a 15-8 hit advantage. Both squads left 11 runners on base.

St. Andrews took advantage of two hit batsmen in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Allred drove in senior Brad Smith with a single to right field and senior Greg Wrape fielder's choice plated senior Anthony Mehling for the second run.

Lander cut the deficit in half with an unearned run in the second. After senior Adam Hutchins reached on a fielding error, he later scored from second on a wild pitch.

The Knights took a commanding 8-1 lead in the bottom of the second as the first six SAPC batters reached base and scored. Sophomore Michael Eastwood had a two-run double down the right field line and Smith supplied a two-run single up the middle. A sacrifice fly by Wrape and an RBI-fielders choice by junior Ritchie Priest scored the final two runs of the rally.

A diving stop and throw by Eastwood at second base ended a bases loaded threat by the Bearcats in the third.

Allred extended the Knights lead to 10-1 with his fifth home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field in the fourth.

In Lander's second bases loaded chance a Hutchins fielder's choice scored the Bearcats second unearned run. However, Horne recorded the final out on a fly ball to escape the threat.

B.J. Horne improved to a perfect 3-0 in only three starts this season. Horne scattered seven hits and two runs (both unearned) while posting four strikeouts.

Allred completed his perfect day with four hits, three RBI, and one run. Freshman Jason Cargile followed with a 4-for-5 performance.
