SPARTANBURG, S.C.----After winning both its games on Friday, the Lander softball team lost three times on Saturday at the South Carolina Classic hosted by USC Upstate.
Lander drops to 19-19-1.
On Saturday, Lander lost the first game to Tusculum, 4-3, then to No. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne, 1-0, then to UNC Pembroke, 2-1.
Against Tusculum, Jenna Kellett was the losing pitcher with four strikeouts. Melissa Ryals went 2-for-4 with one home run and one double, while Heather Bishop went 2-for-5.
Against Lenoir-Rhyne, Colleen Leggieri went 1-for-3. Austin Murrray took the loss with seven strikeouts.
Against UNC Pembroke, Murray had five strikeouts and Leggieri went 1-for-3 with one double.
On Friday, Melissa Ryals hit her second grand slam of the season in one game and Colleen Leggieri recorded a walk-off home run in another.
In Friday's first game, Leggieri's seventh-inning homer gave Lander a 6-5 win over West Virginia State. Kellett earned the win with eight strikeouts. Ryals and Keri Davis also hit home runs in the game.
The Bearcats defeated West Liberty State, 16-1, in the second game.
Ryals went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a grand slam and six RBI. Davis went 2-for-4 with one home run, two doubles and two RBI; and Leggieri went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Murray earned the victory with two strikeouts.
