GREENWOOD – Bryan Harrison scored 23 points as Georgia College and State University held on to at least a share of the Peach Belt Conference lead with a 63-58 victory over Lander Wednesday night at Horne Arena.
Georgia College, which entered the night tied for first place with Columbus State, improved to 19-7 overall and 16-4 in the Peach Belt. The Bobcats won despite getting no points from leading scorer Jeremy Mayweather, who was averaging 15.2 points per game.
The Bearcats fell to 7-19 overall and 4-15 in the conference.
Aaron Clark had 14 points and nine rebounds for Georgia College while Cooper Sellers added 10 points. Harrison, who scored two key baskets and four free throws down the stretch, also had a game-high eight assists.
Lander's Jarred Jackson had 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second half, Zoran Jelenic scored 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor, and J.T. Greene added 10 points.
It was Senior Night at Lander as the Bearcats started an all-senior lineup of Arthur Price, Jahi Rawlings, Joe McEachern, Jelenic and Greene. Rawlings had nine points, McEachern five points and six rebounds, and Price had four defensive boards.
Ronnie Dennis scored with 11:37 left to give the Bobcats their largest lead of the game at 12 points, 54-42. Lander came back with 11 unanswered points including six points by Jackson, a put-back by Jelenic, and a 3-pointer by Greene that cut the Bearcats deficit to 54-53 with 4:27 to go.
But Harrison scored at the 3:50 mark to increase the lead to 56-53 and added a 3-pointer at the 1:55 mark to push the advantage to 59-53. Jackson scored twice in the final minute, but Harrison countered with four free throws to clinch the win.
Georgia College closed the first half on a 22-11 run to take a 30-26 halftime lead. Lander took a 15-8 lead over the first eight-plus minutes before the Bobcats ran off 16 of the game's next 20 points. Sellers hit a 3-pointer with six minutes left to tie the game at 19 and Harrison's 3-pointer gave Georgia College a 24-19 lead. Aaron Gibbs hit a trey to push the lead to 28-22 at the 2:50 mark. The Bearcats, a team that often relies on the 3-point shot, made only one-of-five in the first half.
For the game, Lander made 23-of-56 shots from the floor (41 percent), 9-of-15 free throws (60 percent), and 3-of-15 free throws (20 percent). Georgia College hit 24-of-58 shots from the floor (41 percent), 8-of-13 free throws (62 percent), and 7-of-26 from behind the arc (27 percent). The Bearcats had a 39-34 edge on the boards with Jackson grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.
