GREENWOOD----Colleen Leggieri, Keri Davis and Melissa Ryals all hit home runs Tuesday to lead the Lander softball team to a non-conference doubleheader sweep against Benedict College. Lander won the first game, 5-2, and the second, 10-2. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Lander improves to 5-10-1 overall, while Benedict drops to 3-6.
In the first game, Leggieri hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Davis followed with a three-run blast in the third to lead Lander. Leggieri, Davis and Corrie Bessinger all went 2-for-3.
Benedict's Cylenia Norris had a two-RBI single in the third inning to lead the Tigers.
Ashlea Burdette (4-4) earned the win, striking out four, walking four and allowing two earned runs on just four hits in seven complete innings. Benedict's Tina Sanders (1-3) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in three innings pitched.
In the second game, Benedict took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, but Lander retalliated with nine runs in the bottom of the inning capped by Ryals three-run homer. The game was called due to the eight-run rule.
Jenna Kellett (1-3) was the winner in relief, striking out two, walking two and allowing one earned run on one hit in two innings pitched. Benedict's Kathleen Greenhalgh (2-3) took the loss, walking one and allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits in five innings pitched.
Ryals went 3-for-4 with one homer, one double and three runs scored, while Leggieri (2-for-3, two RBI) and Burdette (1-for-3, one run, two RBI) both tripled. Bessinger went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
For Benedict, Greenhalgh went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
