GREENWOOD----The Georgia College & State University softball team remained unbeaten Sunday when the Bobcats swept Lander in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams, 6-3 and 8-0. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
GC&SU is now 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the PBC, while Lander drops to 3-9, 0-2.
In the first game, Libby Kidd (5-0) earned the win, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in the complete seven innings. Lander's Ashley Burdette (3-3) took the loss, striking out four, walking four and allowing six runs (four earned) on 12 hits in seven innings.
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the first when Diana Baruffa and Chelsea Wilson had RBI singles. Lander cut the margin to 2-1 in the second on Ashlea Burdette's solo homerun over left center field. Lander then took a 3-2 lead in the third when Amber Yarborough had an RBI double and then scored on Colleen Leggieri's RBI single.
GC&SU took the lead for good in the fourth when Baruffa single in Deidra Baitey and Heather Jones singled in Baruffa for a 4-3 lead.
For Lander, Burdette went 1-for-3 with one homerun, while Yarborough went 1-for-3 with one double, one run scored and one RBI and Leggieri went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
GC&SU's Baruffa went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, Deidra Baitey went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, Jones went 2-for-4 with one RBI and Keidra Baitey went 2-for-4.
In the second game, Mandy Chandler (3-0) was awarded the win, striking out four and allowing no runs on three hits in the five complete innings. The game was called due to the eight-run rule. Lander's Jenna Kellett (0-3) was the losing pitcher, striking out one, walking one and allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings pitched.
GC&SU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Deidra Baitey and Baruffa scored on Keidra Baitey's RBI single. The Bobcats exploded for six runs in the fifth inning when Jones blasted a three-run double to left center and Deidra Baitey doubled in Shelbie Lindsey. Jones made it 7-0 when she was walked in then Keidra Baitey crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
For GC&SU, Deidra Baitey went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI; Jones went 2-for-3 with one run and three RBI and Keidra Baitey went 1-for-1 with one run and two RBI.
