GREENWOOD----Gabe McCann and Kevin Davis combined for seven of Lander's 11 hits Friday afternoon to lead the Bearcats' baseball team to a 14-4 non-conference victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian College at Legion Field.
Lander improves to 2-1 overall, while St. Andrews drops to 3-3.
Jake Hover (1-0) earned the win for Lander, striking out two, walking two and allowing one earned run on two hits in 5.2 innings. The Knights' Anthony Mehling took the loss, striking out two, walking two and allowing six runs (one earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings.
The two teams combined for 13 errors (St. Andrews 8, Lander 5)
Lander took an early 1-0 lead when Malcolm McCleod stole home on pickoff attempt at first. Lander extended the lead to 5-0 in the third inning. McCleod and Gabe McCann scored on an error by St. Andrews second baseman Will Clark then Kevin Davis stroked a two-run single which scored Adam Hutchins and James Compo.
In the fourth inning, McCleod singled in McCann to give Lander a 6-0 advantage. Lander added five runs in the sixth inning and three in the eighth.
St. Andrews cut the margin to 6-1 in the fifth inning when Matt Harkness scored on a fielder's choice.
For Lander, Davis went 3-for-3 with four RBI and McCann was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. The Knights scored their final three runs in the eighth inning.
Lander limited St. Andrews to four hits—Michael Eastwood, Ritchie Priest, Greg Wrape and Jose Rodriguez.
