GREENWOOD – Lander's top offensive weapons Adam Arthur and Nick Cooke struck again Wednesday night, scoring a combined three goals in leading the Bearcats to a 3-0 non-conference men's soccer victory over Newberry.
Lander improved to 12-3 overall while the Indians dropped to 8-7. The Bearcats out-shot Newberry 19-12 on a foggy night on the Lander field.
Arthur and Cooke combined on the first goal 15:37 into the game. While in the box, Cooke passed to Arthur who bumped the ball off his chest and then rifled an angled shot from his position to the right of the goal into the far left corner of the net.
Two minutes later, Cooke blasted a goal from approximately 22 yards out unassisted. It was his 15th goal of the season and fourth in two games. The Bearcats led 2-0 at halftime.
Arthur scored again with 37:25 left in the match off an assist from Ivan Stoykov. Arthur collected the pass, dribbled a few steps in the box and drilled a shot into the right corner of the net for his 14th goal of the season.
Stoykov hit the post twice on consecutive shots in the second half before Arthur's goal.
In recording the shutout, Lander goalkeeper Garrett Daum made a couple nice saves off Newberry's star midfielder Debola Ogunseye.
Daum had nine saves while Indians keeper Will Dieterich had five stops. The Bearcats had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
