GREENWOOD – Mars Hill's Rachel Barcio scored her second goal of the game with 9:58 left, lifting the Lions to a 2-1 non-conference women's soccer victory over Lander Tuesday.
Mars Hill, ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II Southeast poll, improved to 6-3. The Bearcats fell to 1-6.
Lander lost more than just a game. Senior midfielder Ashley Timmerman suffered a severe leg injury with 11:51 left in the match.
Less than two minutes later, Barcio rifled a shot from approximately 25 yards out. The ball sailed into the upper left corner of the net beyond Bearcats goalkeeper Rachel Hine's reach.
Barcio, a senior, opened the scoring just 6:41 into the match when she controlled the ball after a corner kick scramble and found the far corner of the net.
Lander sophomore forward Jannica Finnberg tied the game at the 20:05 mark with her second goal of the season with an assist from sophomore midfielder Tracy Opitz. This goal also came after a corner kick scramble in front of the net.
The game remained tied for the next 60 minutes of action until Barcio's game-winner.
Mars Hill outshot the Bearcats 5-1 and had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Hine had the only two saves of the game.
