Women’s soccer suffers 4-0 loss against Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - After a scoreless first period, the Newberry women's soccer team came out firing to down Lander University, 4-0, in a non-conference game at the Newberry soccer complex. Freshman Elyse Clark scored the game winner in the 50th minute, and then added Newberry's third goal at 56:33.

Newberry (4-1-1) allowed Lander (1-4-0) just six shots to Lander and only two shots on goal. On the other hand, the Lady Indians took 12 shots on goal and 19 total, including 14 after intermission alone.

Reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Inga Woiwode assisted the first three Newberry goals.  Brooke Tumblin notched the Lady Indians' second goal at 51:53 off assists from Woiwode and Clark, and put the final tally on the board unassisted at the 65:34 mark.

With the score 2-0, Woiwode fired a corner kick that sailed over most of the defense, finding Clark at the opposite post where she finished with a header past Lander keeper Rachael Hine (Stockton-on-Tees, England).

Lander faces Peach Belt foe Armstrong Atlantic on the road at 4 p.m. Saturday.
