AIKEN, S.C. – The Newberry men's basketball team fought off a Lander attack that pulled the Bearcats within five in the second half as the Indians broke a 20-game losing streak dating back to 1992 and recorded a 87-68 triumph in the PBC/SAC Clash Saturday night at The Courthouse at USC Aiken.
Newberry last defeated Lander, 76-62, on Feb. 10, 1992, in Newberry.
Clemente Martin scored 16 points and led five Indians in double figures as Newberry improved to 3-1 on the season. Lander dropped to 1-4. Jerrell Jeter, Zach Chandler, Michael Dease, and Sammy Monroe scored 12 points each for the Indians. Monroe also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Indians.
Lander was led by Michael Griffin's game-high 17 points. Scottie Smith added 16 for the Bearcats. Smith led Lander in rebouds with nine.
Newberry led 42-26 at halftime.
