CLINTON----Lander University held off a late charge by the Indians of Newberry College in the closing minutes to secure a 72-69 victory in the second annual SAC/PBC Women's Clash held at the Ross E. Templeton Center on the campus of Presbyterian College Friday night.
The Bearcats led by as many as eight points with less than 10 minutes left in the game, but needed four straight free throws from junior guard Lashaundra Dubose to seal the victory over Newberry College.
Dubose was one of three Bearcats who finished the game in double figures. Junior guard Bryony Crouch led all scorers with 23 points on five-of-16 shooting from beyond the arc, while Dubose tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Shatora Irby rounded out the double figure scorers with 13 points and five boards.
Newberry was led by sophomore forward Tonique Frasier who tallied a double-double with 18 points and 11 boards, while freshman guard Chance Stewart came off the bench to score 10 points.
Newberry, who trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, took a 31-30 lead into halftime as Indians' sophomore guard Ashlee Wright scored the final four points of the first half. Frasier led the Indians with six points while Lander was paced by Crouch's 15 points on five-of-12 from three-point range.
