BOLIVAR, Mo.----The No. 1-ranked Lander men's tennis team captured its sixth consecutive NCAA Division II championship Monday when it defeated Barry (Fla.) University, 5-1, at Southwest Baptist University.
Lander, which also won NAIA titles in 1985, 1988, 1991 and 1992, completes the season with an unblemished 20-0 record. Barry completes the season with an 18-4 record.
In doubles competition, No. 1 Frank Potthoff-Laio Teixeira (L) def. Iphton Louis-David Cardozo, 8-3; No. 2 Jan Grueninger-Martin Kahm (L) def. Herbert Bende-Lior Chalbianski, 8-3; and No. 3 Alan Murray-Jean Max Mangones (B) def. Lander's Eric Friberg-Raul Campos, 9-8.
In singles, No. 1 Potthoff (L) def. Bende, 6-3, 6-4; No. 2 Grueninger (L) def. Chalbianski, 6-0, 6-1; and No. 6 Friberg (L) def. Mangones, 6-1, 6-3. Â The other singles matches were suspended because Lander had enough points to win.
Lander, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, defeated Hawaii-Hilo in the first round, then advanced past Central Oklahoma and Florida Southern to reach the finals.
