Lander, Wingate Play to Scoreless Draw

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's soccer team played the final 15 minutes down a player and nearly found the winner late but were unable to find the back of the net as the Bearcats and Wingate Bulldogs played to a scoreless draw Saturday evening at Van Taylor Stadium.

The game was initially pushed back 30 minutes to try to escape the peak of the heat and humidity that has plagued the Southeast, but lightning in the area forced the match to be delayed an additional hour and a half.

Lander held a slight shot advantage, 13-10, but Wingate had more shots on target, 5-4.

Darcy Ahern nearly got the Bearcats on the board in the third minute, but her shot was saved by the Wingate goalkeeper. Leah Hayes Coen was tested for the first time in the 24th minute, but the Bearcat netminder made the first of what wound up being five saves as she recorded her fourth consecutive shutout to start the season.

It is the first time Lander has recorded four straight shutouts to start a season since 2024, also with Hayes Coen in net.

The Limrick, Ireland, native also made a stellar diving save in the 62nd minute to keep Wingate off the board.

The game was physical, with 15 total fouls called and four cards shown, including two yellow cards to Rylee King. The second came in the 76th minute, resulting in a yellow card and the Bearcats playing a player down for the remainder of the match.

However, Lander continued to press forward and nearly found the winner in the 83rd minute on the foot of Ahern, but the junior couldn't quite strike it well enough to put the ball into the net.

Wingate had one last chance in the 87th minute, but Hayes Coen made the save to help see out the draw.

The Bearcats will hit the road for the second time this season when they travel to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday in a rematch of the 2025 Southeast Regional Championship. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
