Columbus State Tops Lander to Force Deciding Game of Greenwood Bracket

GREENWOOD - A Ryan Hansen solo homer in the fifth pulled the Lander baseball team even, but Columbus State answered with a grand slam and a two-RBI double in the sixth to pull away for an 8-2 win on Sunday evening at Dolny Stadium, forcing a deciding game of the Greenwood Bracket in the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Championship.

Lander and Columbus State will meet for the sixth and final time this season on Monday, May 4 at 3 p.m. at Dolny Stadium. All tickets purchased for any game during the tournament will be honored. The winner will travel to Dahlonega to face top-seeded North Georgia in the PBC Championship Series after the Nighthawks advanced with a 10-0 win over Flagler.

Columbus State took a 2-0 lead on a pair of sacrifice flies in the first two innings. Lander answered in the second with a sacrifice fly from Mason Salisbury to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Both offenses were held quiet until the fifth when Hansen lifted a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to tie the game at two.

The Cougars quickly responded in the sixth as the first three batters reached before a grand slam put Columbus State back in front. A two-RBI double later in the inning extended the lead to 8-2.

Lander, which erased a six-run deficit in Friday's win over Georgia College, could not mount another comeback and managed just one hit over the final four innings.
