Lander Drops Conference Opener to Georgia College, 5-2

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's tennis team opened Peach Belt Conference play Friday afternoon with a competitive showing but ultimately fell 5-2 to Georgia College at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.

In doubles, Georgia College secured the opening point. Lander's pairing of Maria Jose Zarza and Evelyn Altmaier provided a bright spot, cruising to a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

The Bobcats answered at No. 3 doubles, where Thilda Danielsson and Bailee Martin fell 6-3, leveling the doubles action. The point came down to No. 2 doubles, and despite a hard-fought effort from Sydney Caulder and Ella Sowman, Georgia College pulled out a tight 7-6 (7-4) win to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.

Lander responded in singles with a pair of strong performances. Altmaier quickly evened the overall match at 1-1, earning a decisive 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Soon after, Sowman delivered another convincing win at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1, giving the Bearcats a 2-1 advantage.

Georgia College, however, responded with depth across the lineup. At No. 3 singles, Natalie Kirka defeated Caulder 6-2, 6-1 to even the match at 2-2. The Bobcats then took the lead at No. 5 singles, where Lucy Kim earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Martin.

At the top spot, Zarza claimed the opening set 6-2, but Georgia College's Rachel Black rallied to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-0 and secure the clinching point. The Bobcats added an insurance point at No. 4 singles, where Laura Almagro defeated Danielsson 6-4, 6-4 to complete the 5-2 result.

Lander returns to action Sunday, March 29, hosting Barton College in a non-conference matchup at 10 a.m. at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center in Greenwood as the Bearcats look to rebound from their conference-opening loss.
