Greenwood, S.C. - An undefeated week awaited Lander Esports during Homecoming week for the University, not dropping a single game in any of their five series.
Academy VALORANT kicked off Homecoming week in a bout with Southern Virginia in what also doubled as their NECC season opener. Starting on Lander's map pick, Southern Virginia took the first two rounds before being held to just one more round for the rest of the half. Lander closed out the game 13-6 under a combined 52 kills from
Diego Hemperley and
Jason Tavares. That duo continued their run through the second game with a combined 41 kills and a 13-7 win to advance to 1-0.
Academy Rivals continued the week for Lander, opening their own NECC schedule with a match against preseason #2 Mississippi State. In a dominant three game rout of the Bulldogs,
Kyle Gheen (57/1/3) and
Conner Gliba (51/3/24) lead the way for the Bearcats. As a team, Lander had a combined 15 deaths en route to a 3-0 victory.Â
JV Rocket League closed out Homecoming week for Lander, starting both their NECC and C3 slates. Week 1 of NECC competition found Lander against Arkansas State University - Mountain Home, where the Bearcats took a quick and decisive 4-0 victory. After winning the first two games 8-2 and 8-3, Lander didn't look back as they finished the series.Â
In Carolina Collegiate Conference action, Lander had a rare double-header against the University of North Carolina due to prior weather reschedules. Picking up where they left off in the Fall, the Bearcats came out with an offensive statement, outscoring the Tar Heels 13-2 in the first series and 14-4 in the second series. After all three series, both
Joel Guillen and
Carson Medlin are top 3 in scoring in both leagues.
