WINGATE, N.C. – Faced with windy conditions and a road date with No. 15 Wingate, the No. 25 Lander women's lacrosse team was dealt a 17-6 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium.
Morgan Hill and
Sophie Warren each had two goals and an assist while both
Ella Benson and
Caroline Nicholson had one goal and one assist for the Bearcats (1-2).
Wingate (2-1) scored 1:19 into the game but Hill answered with her seventh goal of the young season a minute-and-a-half later.
The Bulldogs then scored five unanswered to stretch out a 6-1 lead following the first.
LU showed poise and took advantage of a WU green card that carried over between quarters when Nicholson scored 18 seconds into the second. Hill followed with another goal to slim the gap to 6-3.
Wingate scored four straight times to make it 10-3 and later led 12-4 at the half.
Benson tallied the first goal of her senior season six minutes into quarter No. 3. Warren's second of the day brought the score to 13-6 three minutes prior to the end of the third.
Freshman
Gabriella Eraso collected three draw controls to lead the Blue and Gold this afternoon.
Lander will next play Mount Olive at Van Taylor Stadium this Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. The Bearcats picked up a 10-8 win over the Trojans last April.
