SUMTER, S.C. - The Lander University women's tennis team sent two athletes to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championships this past weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Representing the Bearcats were Maria Jose Zarza and Evelyn Altmaier, who both competed in singles and paired together in doubles.
Zarza fell in the round of 64 to Newberry College's Margarita Roshka in a tight battle, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10).
Altmaier, ranked No. 16, advanced to the round of 32 after defeating Flagler's Marie Fairier 6-7 (7), 6-2, 1-0 (10) in the opening round. She was then eliminated by Erskine's Hanna Vasconez (33) 6-0, 7-6 (7).
In doubles play, Zarza and Altmaier fell to the No. 3 pair from Lees-McRae, Lina Saqout and Patricia Vedia, 8-5 in the round of 32.
