MORROW, Ga. – The Lander women's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games and remained undefeated in Peach Belt Conference play with a 1-0 road win over Clayton State on Saturday afternoon at Laker Field.
The Bearcats (5-1-1, 2-0-0 PBC) were in command for much of today's game and outshot the Lakers (1-5-1, 0-3-0 PBC) by a 20-8 margin.
A dozen of those shots were on-goal for Lander. While not registered as "on-goal" by the statistical account,
Lucy Bova nearly put Lander on the board in the first minute in her return to game action when her shot grazed off the top of the crossbar.
Lander persisted in testing the Lakers' keeper four more times before
Paige Bailey broke through in the 33rd minute with her second goal of the season.
Ansley Morrell sent a cross from the right side and Bailey put it between the wickets of the CSU goalie with her left foot for the 1-0 lead.
After halftime,
Sophia Trio nearly had her first collegiate goal when
Maddie Leber set her up inside the penalty area, but the Lakers' goalie made a diving save to her left to thwart the chance in the 52nd minute.
The Bearcats put three more shots on goal the rest of the way while
Leah Hayes Coen made two saves to preserve the clean sheet; Hayes Coen had three saves during the game and now has five wins this season.
Lander returns to
Van Taylor Stadium this Wednesday, Oct. 1 to face Flagler at 5 p.m.
