GREENWOOD – Thanks to some second-half magic in front of a packed
Van Taylor Stadium on Code Blue night, the Lander women's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games with a 1-0 home victory over Peach Belt foe Flagler on Wednesday.
Freshman
Katherine Haigler scored her first career goal in the 64th minute, and keeper
Leah Hayes Coen made a tremendous save on a Saints penalty kick in the 82nd minute to preserve the clean sheet and the win.
Haigler's chance came when
Darcy Ahern headed forward a well-placed clearance on the right side of the pitch, which presented a tight scoring window that Haigler capitalized on as she kicked it home with her right foot in a slide.
Hayes Coen dove to her left to make the PK stop and the Bearcats improved to 6-1-1, 3-0-0 PBC.
Each side registered 13 shots throughout the tightly contested match – the Bearcats had five on-goal, the Saints, four. Flagler's record fell to 3-3-2, 1-2-1 PBC.
Hayes Coen collected four saves in her sixth win of the season. She now has a 0.75 goals-against average to go along with a .792 save percentage.
Lander will look to keep the momentum going in another home tilt this Saturday at 1 p.m. versus conference-leading and fifth-ranked North Georgia.
