HOMER, Ga. – In their final tune-up before the Peach Belt Conference Championship, the Lander women's golf team picked up their first win of the year in the Bracket Challenge hosted by the University of North Georgia at Chimney Oaks Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
Gracie McCoy (-1) earned Individual Medalist honors and grabbed her first collegiate win.
Competing in this week's tournament were the No. 21 Bearcats, No. 16 Nighthawks, Columbus State and Eastern Florida State College.
The first 36 holes set the bracket portion of the event, with Lander securing the No. 1 seed, UNG the No. 2, Eastern Florida the No. 3 and Columbus State the No. 4.
The Bearcats won their match play with North Georgia in commanding fashion during the final round by a score of 4-1 to win the Championship Medal. As an overall team, Lander shot +12 for the tournament to win by 12 strokes over the Nighthawks.
McCoy went 68-75-72 with a tournament-high 12 birdies over her three rounds in an impressive performance, including seven birdies in the first round.
Sakurako Tanaka (+1) was second overall after scores of 72-73-72 in a steady effort that featured 10 birdies – the second-most in the field.
Kajsa Lindqvist was third at five-over par, carding rounds of 74-73-74.
In fifth place individually was
Isabel Ewers who shot 223, and tied for 18th were
Emily Beiers (Ind.) and
Josefine Winkle.
The Bearcats will compete in the PBC Championship next Friday, Saturday and Sunday (April 18-20) at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
