HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Playing in the Gulf South Conference Championship Game for the second time in the last three years, the Lander women's lacrosse team fought back during the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the Flagler Saints and fell 14-10.
Seniors
Mickey Burnett and
Kara Krusbe, as well junior
Kaia Morey, earned selection to the All-Tournament Team after the game.
The Bearcats (13-4) trailed by six goals early in the fourth but began their comeback bid with 11 minutes to play when
Ella Benson made it 12-7.
Sophie Warren assisted
Brooke Kelly three minutes later to trim the gap to four.
Burnett had the next two – the second coming during a 7-on-6 advantage – to bring the score to 12-10 with about 5:30 left.
Burnett, who led the team with four goals today and seven during the tournament, broke the ice at the start of the game as she took a Benson pass and scored a minute in.
Kelly tied it at two, and Burnett's second score right before the end of the first brought Lander within 4-3 of the Saints who improved their record to 13-5 this season.
Izzy Olson had the lone Bearcat goal during the second quarter as Lander went into halftime down 7-4.
The Blue and Gold controlled the draw circle and won 18 of 28 opportunities.
