Chun’s Walk-Off Double Gives Lander 7-6 Win Over Erskine

GREENWOOD – Eighty days ago, the Lander baseball team saw Erskine walk them off, 7-6, to take the opening weekend series. On Tuesday night, the Bearcats got their revenge as Garrett Chun delivered a two-out, two-RBI walk-off double to lift Lander to a 7-6 victory in their regular-season home finale at Dolny Stadium.

The victory improves Lander to 34-13 overall and 21-3 at home this season.

Chun's walk-off capped off a 4-for-5 night at the plate, extending his on-base streak to 10 games.

Tyler Bowen got the start for Lander and worked around a first-inning home run to pitch two dominant innings, striking out five of the six outs he recorded.

Cooper Backman tied the game in the bottom of the second by scoring Connor Droze on a fielder's choice. After a bases-loaded walk gave the Flying Fleet a 2-1 lead, Mario Lopez Jr. responded with a solo shot to left field—his second home run in as many games—to even the score again at 2-2.

Erskine plated three runs across the sixth and seventh innings to build a 5-2 lead, but Lander responded in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run rally. Grant Sherrod doubled home a run, and a wild pickoff attempt at third base allowed Taichi Nakao to score the tying run and make it 5-5.

Erskine regained the lead in the top of the eighth with an RBI single, setting the stage for Lander's ninth-inning dramatics.

Down to their final out after back-to-back strikeouts, the Bearcats got a spark when Droze was hit by a pitch. Adam Love followed with an infield single, and Lopez Jr. worked a walk to load the bases. That brought up Chun, who delivered the game-winning double just out of the reach of the right fielder, scoring Love and pinch runner Dalton Stroud.

It marked Lander's first ninth-inning walk-off of the season.

The Bearcats will close out the regular season with a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at Georgia Southwestern beginning Friday at 6 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., and the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Lander needs one win to lock up a top-two seed and hosting rights for the opening weekend of the PBC Tournament. They can also clinch at least a share of their second straight PBC regular-season title with some help from Georgia College and State University against North Georgia.
