GREENWOOD – Hosting a game for the final time in 2025, the No. 10/19 Lander women's lacrosse team made a late push but fell 9-7 to No. 11/11 Flagler in a Saturday afternoon Gulf South Conference contest.
Lander (9-3, 1-1 GSC) trailed 4-1 in the second quarter to the Saints (8-5, 1-0 GSC) before
Ella Benson and
Brooke Kelly scored to cut the gap to 5-3 heading into halftime.
Three Saints goals brought the score to 8-3 with 4:37 left in the third, but
Sophie Warren took advantage of a woman-up chance late in the quarter for an 8-4 score off a pass from
Izzy Olson.
Olson later scored the next Bearcat goal and trimmed the deficit to 8-5 six minutes into the fourth.
Following Flagler's final goal, Kelly and Benson put goals on the board 44 seconds apart in the Bearcats' final push over the final few minutes, though they were unable to score again.
Autumn Huskey and
Curran Penot each caused three Saints turnovers to help lead the defensive side of the field on Saturday.
Lander's next game will be on Tuesday, April 8 against Mount Olive in a non-conference tilt. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.
