Late Comeback Lifts Lander to Series Finale Win Over North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Lander baseball team scored six runs in the final two innings to pull off a 12-9 comeback victory over the North Georgia Nighthawks on Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.

The win marked Lander's ninth comeback of the season and was the second consecutive Sunday with a come-from-behind victory. The Bearcats previously plated five runs in the eighth inning to beat Columbus State, 5-4, on March 16.

Grant Sherrod (Sumner, Wash.) gave the Bearcats (21-9, 9-3 PBC) an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run to left-center. However, North Georgia (20-9, 10-2 PBC) quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and added two more in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

Lander didn't back down. RBI hits from Cooper Backman (Sarasota, Fla.), Jackson Hoshour (Sumter, S.C.), and Taichi Nakao (Auckland, New Zealand) tied the game at 4-4. In the fifth, a double steal by Sherrod and Garrett Chun (Jacksonville, Fla.) put the Bearcats ahead, 5-4. Backman added another RBI single to extend the lead to 6-4.

As they had in the previous two games, the Nighthawks came up with a big inning in the middle of the game, scoring five runs to retake the lead, 9-6.

But Lander wasn't finished. In the eighth inning, Sherrod drove in two more runs with a single, bringing the Bearcats within one, 9-8, and setting up a dramatic finish.

With one out in the ninth, Hoshour singled, and Lowndes Still drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Nakao then hit a grounder back to the pitcher, who overthrew the shortstop covering second base. The ball rolled into the outfield, where it was misplayed by the Nighthawks' centerfielder, allowing both Hoshour and Still to score and give Lander a 10-9 lead, with Nakao standing in scoring position.

Sherrod kept the rally going with a single to drive in Nakao, his fourth RBI of the game, seventh of the series, and ninth of the week, extending the lead to 11-9. Adam Love (Roswell, Ga.) provided extra insurance with another RBI single, scoring Sherrod to make it a four-run advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Nate Winterhalter (Venice, Fla.), who entered the game in the eighth inning, kept the Nighthawks off the scoreboard for the final two innings, earning his first win of the season in relief.

Lander will hit the road again for nonconference action on Tuesday, traveling to Mars Hill for the fourth meeting between the two teams this season. The Bearcats swept the Lions in a three-game series on Feb. 14-15. First pitch for Tuesday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
