Sherrod Named NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Week

SALISBURY, N.C. – After being named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week, Lander's Grant Sherrod (Sumner, Wash.) has now been recognized as the Southeast Region Player of the Week by the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the organization announced Tuesday evening.

This marks Lander's second Southeast Region weekly award this season, with Jake Larson (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) earning Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 25. Sherrod is the first Bearcat to win Region Player of the Week honors since Connor Droze (Roebuck, S.C.) last season.

Sherrod put together an outstanding week, going 11-for-18 (.611) with three home runs, two doubles, eight RBIs, and 10 runs scored.

In Lander's midweek game against Wingate, Sherrod launched a three-run home run to extend the Bearcats' lead from 3-2 to 6-2, providing crucial insurance runs in the victory. Then, in Game 2 of Lander's three-game series with Augusta, he worked a bases-loaded walk for the game-winning RBI. That at-bat capped off a dominant performance in which he went 4-for-6 with a home run, three RBIs, and four runs scored.

The Sumner, Washington, native is currently on a 10-game hitting streak and has recorded at least one hit in 18 of the 21 games he has played this season. Entering last night's game, Sherrod was batting .484 with five home runs and 15 RBIs over Lander's last 15 games. He leads the team with a .421 batting average and ranks seventh nationally in hits with 40.

During Lander's midweek game Tuesday night against Belmont Abbey—when he was named to the award—Sherrod went 4-for-5 with two more RBIs.
