Lander Splits Doubleheader with Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - After falling victim to a big inning to lose game one, 10-3,  the Lander Baseball team responded with a four-run sixth inning in game two to take the lead and never looked back and earned a 5-2 win to split the first two games of their three-game set with the Mount Olive Trojans on Saturday at Scarborough Field.

Lander now sits at 2-4 after the pair of games while the Trojans are 4-2.

Garrett Chun (Jacksonville, Fla.), Grant Sherrod (Sumner, Wash.), and Zach Cowart (Lexington, S.C.) each recorded two hits in game 1 while Evan Wickeri (Middleburg, Fla.) tallied three hits in the second game to lead all players.

Game 1: Mount Olive 10, Lander 3
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings before Mount Olive struck for two in the third with a pair of RBI singles to make it 2-0.

Cowart cut the deficit in half to lead off the fourth inning with a solo shot to right field. Lander got two runners in scoring position with two outs in the inning but couldn't bring the tying run across.

Mario Lopez Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) tied the game in the fifth with a single to score Sherrod who led off the inning with a double. Back-to-back hit-by-pitches loaded the bases for the Bearcats with only one out but the Trojans were able to escape with a strikeout and an infield pop-up.

Mount Olive made Lander pay for the missed opportunities as they plated a run in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly and then exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to expand the lead to eight. The Trojan pitching staff held Lander at bay the rest of the way, as Lander only plated one run in the ninth on a wild pitch.

Game 2: Lander 5, Mount Olive 2

Mount Olive once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead through four innings while leaving runners stranded continued to haunt Lander as the Bearcats left eight on base in the first four frames.

However, that started to change in the fourth as Lander took advantage of an error to score their first run of the game.

Then, in the sixth, Will McClellan (Anderson, S.C.) led off the inning with a single and while Taichi Nakao (Auckland, New Zealand) and Connor Droze (Roebuck, S.C.) walked, Lander also had two flyouts and was in danger of stranding another trio of runners until Wickeri and Sherrod each recorded two-RBI singles to give Lander their first lead of the day at 5-2.

After giving up runs in the second and third, Dominic Puccetti settled down and threw four more scoreless innings while striking out right and only walking two to earn his second win in as many tries. From there, Kurt Rogers came in and recorded the six-out save, his first of the season, to give the Bearcats the win.

The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at Scarborough Field with a 1:00 PM first pitch.
