Lander Finishes Perfect Homestand with Dominant Win over Limestone

GREENWOOD – The Lander Baseball team scored in five of eight innings and used a six-inning performance from Luke Johnson (Anderson, S.C.) to avenge their earlier loss to the Limestone Saints in dominant fashion, winning 13-2 on a beautiful Tuesday evening at Dolny Stadium.

With the win, the Bearcats wrapped up their eight-game homestand with a perfect 8-0 record and improved to 10-5 overall. Limestone dropped to 6-10.

Over the eight games, the Blue and Gold outscored their opponents 80-26, scoring at least five runs in each contest.

Luke Johnson picked up his second win of the season after tossing six innings of one-run ball, allowing only four hits.

However, Johnson found himself in trouble early with free passes. He put two runners on in the first inning with only one out, but a foul out and a strikeout ended the threat.

From there, the Lander offense took over. After a Taichi Nakao (Auckland, New Zealand) leadoff single and Connor Droze (Roebuck, S.C.) was hit by a pitch, Grant Sherrod (Sumner, Wash.) drove home Nakao with a single of his own before he and Droze both came home on a three-run shot to right field by Mario Lopez Jr. (Tampa, Fla.), giving Lander an early 4-0 lead.

After a 1-2-3 second inning from Johnson, the Bearcats tacked on three more runs. Cooper Backman (Sarasota, Fla.) led off the inning with a triple, followed by three straight singles from Caden Crews (Jansen Beach, Fla.), Nakao, and Evan Wickeri (Middleburg, Fla.)—the first and third of which resulted in RBI—making the score 6-0. Lander then capitalized on a Limestone throwing error to push their lead to 7-0 after two innings.

Limestone scored a run in the fourth inning and threatened again in the fifth and sixth, but Johnson kept the visitors off the scoreboard and preserved the lead.

Sherrod added an RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 8-1, and the Bearcats put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh. A pair of wild pitches brought home Sherrod before Lander took advantage of two more Saints errors to plate three additional runs, extending the lead to 12-1.

Another wild pitch allowed Lander to score its 13th run in the eighth before Limestone plated a run and loaded the bases against Tyler Bowen (Dagsboro, Del.). However, the senior responded with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Lander will travel to St. Augustine, Fla., to open Peach Belt Conference play this weekend. They will face the Flagler Saints in a three-game set. The series opens on Friday (Feb. 28) with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. Game 2 is set for Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and the series concludes on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
