Hunsberger and Davis Earn Major Awards - Highlights Eight Named to All-Conference Carolinas Team

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Junior David Hunsberger (Duncan, S.C.) and freshman Christian Davis (Arizona City, Ariz.)were named the Wrestler and Freshman of the Year, respectively, in Conference Carolinas as the league announced this afternoon as they released their 2024-25 Wrestling All-Conference team. In total, eight Lander wrestlers were tabbed as one of the top three wrestlers in their weight class:

Hunsberger (165) and Davis (133) were joined by Isham Peace (141) on the first team, Kaden Kuenzi (125), Nathe Buckovich (174), and Isaac Sheeren (285) were named to the second team, while Reid Noble (149) and Marvelous Rutledge (197) were named to the third team.

This is the second-straight year that Lander has had eight wrestlers named to the All-Conference team.

In the six years of Lander Wrestling, this marks the fourth time the Bearcats have had the conference Wrestler of the Year, Zeth Brower being the last to win it in 2023, and the third time they have had the Freshman of the Year, Hunsberger the last to earn the honor in 2023. This marks the third time that the Bearcats have swept those two awards as well.

Hunsberger earns his first Wrestler of the Year honor after going 21-2 overall and 7-1 against Conference Carolinas opponents. The Duncan, S.C. native has been ranked atop the NWCA rankings at 165 all season. He won his second consecutive Midwest Classic title in December and is ranked in the top-three in the NCAA's "Most Dominant Wrestlers". Of his 21 wins, 15 of them have come via major decision (1), tech fall (8), or pin (6).

Davis made a statement in his first season in Greenwood, winning 25 matches and was a perfect 9-0 against conference opposition. The Arizona native became the first Bearcat freshman to ever top the podium at the Midwest Classic and is currently ranked third in the NWCA poll at 133. Of Davis' 25 wins, 17 of them have come via major decision (7), tech fall (6), or pin (4).

In total, the eight Bearcats all-conference members have a combined record of 156-54 with 61 of those wins coming against Conference Carolinas competition.

The Lander Wrestling team looks for their fourth straight conference championship on Sunday as they host the Conference Carolinas Wrestling Championship inside Finis Horne Arena. The semifinal matchup against Belmont Abbey is slated to begin at 11:00 AM.
