Dominant Pitching Leads Lander to Doubleheader Sweep of Mars Hill

GREENWOOD - The Lander Baseball team struck early in both games of their doubleheader against the Mars Hill Lions and used dominant pitching performances from both Jagger Jefferis (Barnesville, Ohio) and Dominic Puccetti (Monroe, Mich.) to secure two wins, 7-0 and 8-3, on Friday at Dolny Stadium.

Lander improved to 4-5 while Mars Hill dropped to 3-8.

Evan Wickeri (Middleburg, Fla.) had three hits with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bearcats in game one while Will McClellan (Anderson, S.C.) and Garrett Chun (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the way in game two with two hits a piece.

Game 1: Lander 7, Mars Hill 0
Wickeri got Lander on the board early as his first-inning sac fly drove home Connor Droze (Roebuck, S.C.), who reached on a triple on a ball that the center fielder lost in the sun, to give Lander a 1-0 lead after one inning.

The graduate student from Middleburg, Fla. struck again in the fifth, scoring Taichi Nakao (Auckland, New Zealand) on an RBI double to double the Lander lead to 2-0. Grant Sherrod (Sumner, Wash.) then drove home Wickeri and Caden Crews (Jansen Beach, Fla.) to make it 4-0, Lander.

However, one run was enough support for the Lander pitching staff as three pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout. Jefferis started the game and struck out seven across seven innings of work, spreading out four hits across those seven innings.

Lander added runs in the sixth on a Crews fielder's choice and two more in the seventh on a Mario Lopez Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) RBI single and a wild pitch.

Kurt Rogers (Westminster, S.C.) relieved Jefferis in the eighth and sent the Lions down in order before giving way to Jackson Bryant (Anderson, S.C.) who struck out two en route to preserving Lander's first shutout of the season.

Game 2: Lander 8, Mars Hill 3
Lander struck again in the first inning, this time off the bat of Nakao with a sac fly. Zach Cowart (Lexington, S.C.) then added another in the first frame with an RBI single.

McClellan added a third run with a no-doubt solo shot to left field to make it 3-0 in the fifth.

Puccetti was just as dominant as Jefferis. The Michigan native pitched six innings of shutout baseball, striking out seven and only allowing three hits. Joshua Sanchez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) then added two more innings of relief while striking out three of his own.

Lander added some insurance in the late innings again as another fielder's choice and wild pitch resulted in two runs in the seventh before a Chun two-RBI double and a Ryan Hansen (St. Augustine, Fla.) sac fly made it 8-0.

The Lander staff held the Lions off the board for the first 17 innings but Mars Hill utilized four walks in the ninth to their advantage to plate three but Bennett Sloper (Simpsonville, S.C.) came in and shut the door for his first save of the season.

The two teams will look to complete the series tomorrow at 3:00 PM at Dolny Stadium.
