GREENWOOD – In the season opener at Van Taylor Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the Lander women's lacrosse team fell 13-5 to South Atlantic Conference-member Limestone in non-conference action.
Brooke Kelly and
Kayla Smith led the Bearcats with two goals apiece while
Mickey Burnett added another.
Sophie Warren tallied three assists on the day.
The Saints gained a 3-0 lead midway through the opening quarter before Smith put the Bearcats on the board for the first time in 2025 via a free-position goal with 8:17 left. Limestone stretched its lead to 5-1 after 15 minutes.
Kelly cut the deficit to 5-2 two minutes into the second quarter and Burnett made it 6-3 with 6:50 to go in the half – Warren assisted on both scores.
Warren got her third helper on Kelly's second goal that made it 10-4 to open the fourth quarter. Smith closed Lander's scoring with 4:33 to play on a free-position strike.
Kaia Morey anchored the Bearcat defense with five caused turnovers and ground balls, and
Autumn Huskey caused four while picking up five ground balls.
The Bearcats have a week off before welcoming Converse to Greenwood next Saturday (Feb. 8) at 1 p.m.
